Hey guys, Welcome to the first of our Battle reports for 2016. Maelstrom and I are both practicing new casters and promised to play 50 games before we switched! This is our first go at doing BP’s, so send us your feedback! We will try to get more pictures next time.

This week. We have Epic Krueger vs Epic Vayl.

Legion is always horrible for me as a Circle player. I had lots of answers when I played Cygnar, but now it seems like I just get all burned and stabbed up. Out of all my lists I think this one is strong, but not perfect. Those damn Ravagores just keep burning away all my support.

So this will be my 6th game with Vayl2 and while I’m starting to feel a little more confident I’m also still a little leery of the finer points of playing a successful game with epic Vayl due to the a lack of experience in general. I know going up against Miffed’s Circle list is going to be tough but I believe I have to tools to pull off a win if I can get myself into the proper position.

DEPLOYMENT

Miffed Gorax

I will the roll and choose to go first. Mainly due to the fact that I always choose to go second to get better positioning and to get my beasts as far up as I can get with my Advanced Deployment. I do a pretty standard set up, getting my big beasts ready to take the objective and support nicely crowded around them. In both our cases, the terrain means little. All I want to do is keep my units alive a round or two and away from the Ravagore’s shots, so I get the Blood Trackers in position to hide behind the house on the right.

Maelstrom

I get to choose the side of the table here and choose the side with the 2 forests and a wall because I don’t want any of those already high defense Circle guys hiding behind a wall making them even harder to hit.

My setup is pretty standard for a Vayl2 list with an Angelius on each side of Vayl, a Seraph to the right of the Angelius and my Ravagore behind the forest on the far right. My leftmost Angelius is flanked by my Unit of Hex Hunters with the pot in behind them ready for corpse collection and my 2nd Ravagore to the far left behind the other forest.

ROUND 1

Miffed Gorax

Pretty standard first turn, get everyone up the board. I get the Druids up so they can screen a bit, although their smoke won’t matter with all that Eyeless Sight out there, but it will protect them from a few charges from his infantry. They get in a good spot so that they can at least protect most of the army with Counter Magic. I push up the beasts so they are ready for next round to take out as much as I can. I move Kreug up and put up Stormwall. Hoping that will counter a few of his AoEs. I move the Blood Witch up so that she is ready to demolish the infantry next round, hoping that high defense will keep me alive.

Maelstrom

My first thought after seeing Miffed’s deployment is to try and take care of the Bloodweaver Night Witch because I know she chew’s through infantry like no bodies business so I’m in range, I boost to hit and take her down round 1 which feels pretty good.  I then activate my second Ravagore and take a shot at the Warpwolf Stalker missing on range and dropping a scather a little too far to the side for my liking.  I then activate my Hex Hunters and run them up into the zone maybe being a little too cocky with them. The Pot goes next and moves up and kills 3 of it’s own Acolytes allowing me to spawn a shredder and run it up into the zone. Next Vayl activates, throws Refuge on one of my Angelii and Admonition on the other and puts Occultation on herself. My two Angelius move up 9”, my Seraph moves up 8” and I end my turn.

ROUND 2

Miffed Gorax

Well.. my infantry killer is dead. I think i made a dumb move putting her so far forward. Have I mentioned I hate Ravagores? He hasn’t done too much damage at this point, but things here aren’t perfect. I push hard forward with the druids, trying to get in to the 3 inch range to deplete his Hex Hunters while the pot is so far back. They manage to take a few off the board, but again, nothing special. With the Druids that can’t see I pop some clouds to try and give them a bit of survivability.. I am having a hell of a time rolling 7s. Finally I put up counter magic and Elemental protection. I needed that Blood Witch for this. I am forced to push forward with the stalker to finish the infantry off… I am not very smart… so I move in the Wilder to cast Primal. I figure the stalker can demolish the last three with berserk up, and then cast his own animus Lightning Strike to get out of there. Frenzy will become an issue, but my hope is that he has to bring something in to tie me up next round and end up taking the frenzy. I really didn’t need to Primal, and I learned my lesson about throwing that around too much… The Stalker charges in, kills two infantry, casts lightning strike, kills one more and gets out of there. Megalith moves in to the zone and Geomancies a Lightning off Kruegs to take out a couple more and stay in the zone to jam up. The Witch Croc Doc moves up and pops tough on to the Druids. Hopefully they will survive the round. Kruger moves up.. and I forget to cast Stormwall. This may be my undoing…

Maelstrom

Well that didn’t go so well for old Maelstrom. That’s a lot of dead Hex Hunters that were too far away for corpse token collection. I also now have no real scenario presence so it’s time to start looking for other options. Now I’m thinking I need to get some of my heavies up there and do some major damage to those beasts and block off as much of his infantry as possible. Im hoping a well placed scather from the Ravagore will block his unit of blood trackers from coming around the side of the house and doing some major damage along with the druids. Luckily there’s a druid sitting right at the corner so I hit him and leave a scather there hopefully just blocking enough space to keep that unit locked behind the house. My second Ravagore takes a shot and manages to drop a Tree and set his Warpwolf Stalker on fire but not doing much damage. I then charge one of my Angelius at one of his druids which was foolish because the objective was right there. So instead of getting an armor piercing on the objective I got it on a druid… Moving right along I Managed to get some damage done with the Seraph on the Warpwolf Stalker and the big ol Wold but both remained alive. It was about this time my dice started to betray me and even after popping feat nothing of any consequence got done but I managed to get my Seraph into position to stop charges on my objective.

Round 3

Miffed Gorax

This is terrible. I know I can get two control points this turn, but taking out the Objective will be tough. I will have to do it with my caster. Stalker frenzies and beats up Megalith. Ouch.

I forget that the Seraph in the way also has admonition. The Black Clad runs forward and drops a Hunters Mark on him, giving Megalith the movement I need to get in close. I heal up megalith and run up to take him out… he runs away. At the last minute I remember to force a geomancied Telekinesis on the Seraph and he is teleported right back to where I want him. Megalith does his thing and we have cleared one huge issue. Krueger moves over to the left of the board, takes out the objective with his ranged weapon. Drops storm wall. He Is sitting on no Transfers.. But I KNOW Maelstrom won’t be able to resist taking out Megalith before he tries to assassinate, I put up some stones as well as I can to try to block a reach charge, and The dudes do as much work as they can beating things up. Finally i drop Counter magic.. but I have left the leader to far away to properly cover Krueger. I run the Blood trackers around to engage the Ravagore that is giving me trouble. Two control points this turn. Time to hunker down and hope i positioned those stones well enough

Maelstrom

I know at this point that a scenario win is just not in the cards for me after losing the Seraph and Kreuger still not having popped feat. So looking at other options I can’t help but notice that Kreuger is not sitting on any transfers and very well could be within melee range of an Angelius. I am however not sure about that 2 inches so I try to run my succubus over into range of Kreuger to get an Obliteration and hope that if it doesn’t kill him I can pick away with something else. After rolling to hit on the Succubus I roll damage hoping for an 8 or under so I don’t kill it. I then roll double 6’s. Sorry Succubus. Nothing personal. Having failed that I realize my last real hope is getting that Angelius to charge Kreuger and hoping I got the 2” after jamming up against a stone and Warpwolf Stalker. I declare the charge, make my measurments and holy hell I got it by what looks to be less than a quarter inch. However I still have to hit a def 15 with a mat 6. After praying to the dice gods of ol’ I throw down a boosted attack roll and breathe a deep sigh of relief. I hit. Now an armor pierce brings Kreug’s arm down to an 8 which gives me dice plus 6. I boost and once more ask the dice gods for their favor and roll out a 14 which means I can unclench my butt and breathe again. (**edit** Thanks goes out to Marc-Andre and ExCalvanist onReddit, Jason has learned today that Armor Pierce only adds +2 to his damage roll. I will get this right next time. Pretty sure the results would have been the same, but it pays to know!)

AFTERTHOUGHTS

Miffed Gorax

Well. I hate Legion. But I am really happy for Maelstrom. I have been beating him down with these lists for months now, and he deserved this win. I made huge mistakes with the Night Witch and that Primal was just stupid. Not having any transfers?? Come on MIFFED!!?? I think I am going to drop the Black clad and put in another Night Witch. They do so much work and I love the mayhem they play on infantry. Until next time Legion.. until next time…I am positive I also made a few card mistakes, but that is why I am playing this caster 50 times in a row.. so I stop making mistakes.

Maelstrom

So overall I’m happy I won the game. Its been awhile since i’ve taken a chunk out of the ol’ Miffed but at the same time I think I could have played this list a lot better. It is a learning game and I know what I need to improve on. Overall I absolutely love Vayl as a caster and her tier is just ridiculous (no errata!) so perhaps within the next 44 or so games I’ve decided I’m going to run her I can get this shit down to a science!
